Mike Banker - Owner, Carpenter
After moving to Portland in 1992 and while looking for a “real job” I started working for a small contractor who was restoring a turn of the century craftsman home in Northwest Portland. My new boss was a skilled finish carpenter who took great pride in his work and although I had only the most basic carpentry skills he took me on as an apprentice. Being able to stand back and look at something you have built with your hands is a great feeling and when I realized I could do that every day I knew I had found a new career. By 1996 I had built my own construction and remodeling business and I have never looked back.
To this day I am still very hands-on with my projects and you can expect to see me on site practically every day. Whether I am there doing carpentry or just making sure that my sub-contractors have everything they need for the day, I am present and in constant communication.
I was born and raised in Ohio and completed my business degree at Miami University of Oxford. When I first came to Oregon I fell in love with the vibe of the city and launched full steam into exploring the surrounding mountains, gorge and coast. Who doesn’t though right? Since then Portland has become an incredible city to live in and my wife and daughter and I spend as much time as we can exploring everything the Pacific Northwest has to offer.
I have a passion for architecture and cooking and if you are within earshot of where I'm working you will hear that I have a love for all genres of music. I find the little details on a project to be what can really make all the difference. So, if you’ll just excuse me I need to get back to focusing on creating a continuous reveal from this grout line to the frame at the bottom of the steam oven.
Design referrals:
I have been fortunate to have met and worked with many great architects and designers in Portland. If you are just now thinking about your design I am happy to refer you to someone who would be a good fit for your project.

"Mike built our house and has built several of my designs, including one for himself, and he has proved time and time again, that he is a great all-around contractor. Relentlessly fair, organized, intelligent and a true craftsman. Mike is engaged and in the trenches all the way through a project, from the upfront spreadsheets to the finish carpentry at the end of a job. There is always the highest level of comfort and trust when I'm working with Mike." -Webster
"True Blue Construction is everything you want in a contractor! Reliable, efficient, and knowledgable! They worked on my home and businesses and are my go to for all my construction needs." -Pam
In 2013 we underwent a major remodel, moving our kitchen from the west side of our 1908 home to the east side in order to capture a Mt. Hood view and maximize more natural light. We found out about Mike Banker when we went to dinner at a friend’s house for the first time. Her house was built around the same year as ours and had clearly undergone a fantastic remodel throughout the house. Our host had only great things to say about working with Mike during the extensive project she commissioned. Seeing the quality work in her home first hand and the positive nod toward the ease of working with Mike led us to contact him when we were ready. At the time we had another strong referral from our architect-design firm, but we wisely went with Mike to lead our project.Mike thoughtfully communicated the high-level detail and estimated timelines for our project. He was incredibly responsive to our questions and concerns which put us at ease. We were pleased that our major project came through following the calendar he gave us and within the budget we agreed to. Any add-ons were driven by our decisions as the work was underway. Mike patiently worked with us to keep perspective and also accommodate some of our ideas as the work was in flight. His subs have been with him for many years and they are true craftsmen. Our home turned out beautifully and we couldn’t be happier. - Cristi & Tom
Mike Banker, owner of True Blue Construction, is the best contractor we have hired during our 25 years in our 1924 Laurelhurst home. Because we have used several different contractors during our time here, we feel we know what constitutes a great one. Here are some of the reasons we feel that Mike fits the “great” description: Mike has excellent communication skills. He takes the time to walk the homeowner through the process. He regularly (almost daily) shares updates and seeks feedback. His bids are on target. His start and finish project times are accurate. Mike is knowledgeable about all aspects of contracting. He hires excellent sub-contractors, and he moves the project along seamlessly. His schedule is precise and there are not gaps of time when the project is idle. He is creative and knows what will make the project shine. He willingly makes suggestions, but encourages the owners’ input as well. He works extremely well with everyone involved in the project. In our most recent remodel there was a potential issue with the appliance store. When the hood for the stove arrived severely dented, he handled it completely and harmoniously. He and his crew show up every day on time, and they clean up completely at the end of every day. Mike is a true professional. We recommend him enthusiastically and look forward to our next project with him at the helm. - Jim & Kathy
“Mike was a pleasure to work with on our kitchen remodel and we would recommend him to anyone in search of a contractor. He was detail-oriented and kept the whole project moving smoothly. All the work was very high quality and Mike offered excellent advice whenever we needed some help making a decision. Mike has a relaxed manner and his calm and quiet were a great counterpoint to what otherwise could have felt like a chaotic process. Our project was completed early and exactly within budget. And most importantly, we love our new kitchen. Thanks!” -Mark
"When you hire a contractor and he blows away your expectations, you're compelled to say something. When I heard Mike was building a web site, I was pleased to hear he was going to include some reviews. True Blue Construction lived up to its meaning and then some. Webster says the definition of true-blue is: "completely faithful and loyal to a person or an idea". And that is exactly what I got by hiring Mike. I wanted to remodel the entire interior of the house I had just purchased in Portland. My situation was a little stressful, because the house I was leaving in another state was scheduled to close and my furnishings had to be out and on the way to my new Portland home within 6-weeks. I knew of Mike's reputation and I asked if he could complete the remodel in the 6-week timeframe. He said he would do his best, but I don't think either of us expected it to be move-in ready in 6-weeks. I can tell you that the workers Mike employs love working for him. Plumbers, electricians, tile-setters and carpenters alike were on the job when scheduled and worked long hours, including some weekends (unexpected). They were all consummate craftsmen, and more than met my expectations. I'll never look further than True Blue Construction for any future construction needs." -Jerry
My confidence in True Blue Contracting is very high; here's why.
Mike Banker:
Is a good person; I'm very comfortable having him in my home.
Has high standards for his work and the work of his subcontractors.
Hires top notch subcontractors and is responsible for all work and timelines.
Has good taste and is creative; it shows in his work.
Has an incredibly strong work ethic; he is careful, fast and hard working.
Is on budget & on schedule: any changes are discussed and agreed upon.
Listens to what we want and makes it happen.
Leaves the job site clean daily, which really impacts life during a remodel!
Finds, reveals and fixes problems! Doing shoddy work isn't in his DNA.

Mike did a kitchen remodel for our family. The work was done on time, on budget, and done very well. We liked that Mike was on site most days and doing a lot of the work himself. He made sure everything was clean and put away at the end of the day. Couldn’t have asked for a better experience! -Christine
Mike is highly professional and very responsible to the costumer, the job, himself, and to his profession. He is demanding about maintaining high quality work by himself and his subcontractors. Mike has an excellent aesthetic sense, transcends housing styles from Craftsman to Modern (don't know about Queen Anne); I trusted his judgement completely. He is a crazy fast worker, with excellent taste in music, although Classical not so much - no Mahler on the job site. I enjoyed having him work on my house. -Ken
